Non-Negotiable

When you are building a team or maybe if you are hiring someone there are several elements that come into the equation. They call them “The Big C’s”. Chemistry, competency and character.
Chemistry: This is how well he or she fits relationally. Could be with the leader, other team members or those that they are serving. Do they constantly show a lack of respect for the position or the person?
Competency: This is how well he or she can accomplish the work. Can they handle small or large tasks without being asked several times their progress? Do they catch the vision and are they willing support the vision over their own agenda? Do they need to be micro-managed?
Character: This is how mature is he or she in their faith. Are they someone you can trust? Do they represent themselves well or the organization well? Do they know where the line is and refuse to cross it?
These are the big 3, but my question is, Which is the most important? If you could pick only one element to hire or add to your team what would it be and why?

I say chemistry because if I’m the one leading the team, the other 2 are part of that. Chemistry is a huge one for me. The individual could be the most gifted / competent person in their area but if they cannot get along with the leader or the rest of the team it won’t work!
I have to say chemistry is most important…..all of these qualities are important but chemistry is definitely number one. It is very difficult to work well as a team if you don’t at least get along. If the person constantly shows lack of respect for the position or the person the team will not prosper or grow!
Awesome guys! I think I agree with you both. Chemistry is huge. I think you can teach the competency if they are willing to learn, which goes back to chemistry and I think that someone who has the chemistry with you and your team most likely will have the character that you connect with. Good stuff and good answers guy.
I would have to argue that chemistry can be built, but character is most important. Bad character will inevitably destroy good chemistry. I’ve seen a lot of marriages, business partnerships, etc. crumble because “good chemistry” was destroyed by bad character…
Character.
With good character comes a desire to build the chemestry needed to make a ministry, marriage or buisness work up to its full potencial. What Jon said is very true.
Jon is smart but don’t feed his ego
I think this is one of those questions that there is no right answer and it may be different for each situation and for each position. Love the feedback. This is such a crucial question for all leaders. Even though I asked what is the most important, or if you could only have one, I wonder if all three are needed for success?
This is a good question. I think there is such a fine line between all three. To me, the thinnest of the fine lines is between competency and chemistry. And maybe because I’m thinking in the business world, but there are some people that just aren’t going to be totally in sync with the team all the time. They are just good at what they do. And in some cases, the best leaders in athletics are ones that get in the face of teammates or coaches that don’t try to be buddy buddy with the players. So, yea, competency plays a huge part in my mind.
There is an interesting difference in view between those in the secular workplace vs. those who are in the local church.
