Do Something

Awareness, Commitment & Transformation. Three core values for the Poverty Revolution challenge set before our students.  Our goal was to make them aware of social justice globally, do something locally and connect them internally with the local church.  So far we have 30 students committed to our Poverty Revolution weekend March 19th-21st and we have had $4575 pledged towards social justice.  This weekend will be tough, cold, uncomfortable and force them to face issues head on.

They are out in the community and their circle of influence talking about social justice and raising funds.  So many creative ways they can raise funds for this.

  • Drink water for two weeks and take all the funds that you would have spent on sodas, coffee, fruit and energy drinks and donate them to Poverty Revolution.
  • Skip a meal a day for 10 days and donate the funds towards Poverty Revolution.  Maybe get the entire family to do it.
  • Instead of going to a movie and buying snacks…stay in with friends and watch a DVD and donate the funds to Poverty Revolution.
  • Shovel snow.
  • Babysit and tell them that everything you are making is going to social justice.

So many ways to make people aware and have them do something so much bigger than themselves.  The culmination of raising funds will come on the Poverty Revolution weekend when they will live in cardboard boxes, eat rice, peanut butter, plain oatmeal and drink only water.  They will be working to feed the homeless, hungry and needy.

The goal is to make them aware of social justice issues such as: homelessness, poverty, clean water acts, human trafficking, aids, hunger and fair trade.  After the weekend is completed they will come together to disperse the funds through World Vision.

Very excited about the potential for this to change students forever.  Partner with us in praying for them to follow through with their commitments and have the boldness to talk about social justice.  If you are interested in sponsoring a student or participating yourself email me at Ryan@fellowshiptoday.com

Poverty Revolution

There is poverty all around us.  It affects us whether we realize it or not because sooner or later we are going to choose to do something about it or ignore it and that very action affects us.  Social Justice causes have been on my heart more and more which is ironic because I have never really had a heart of compassion.  If you get hurt, get up and quit whining.  I know this though, I’m not alone, several of you are the same way.  In fact if something bad happened in the world, it is easier to throw money at it than to roll up the sleeves and do something about it.

Are you aware of such issues such as, human trafficking, sex trafficking, clean water acts, homelessness, hunger, poverty and fair trade? Half the battle is knowing what is out there, the other half is figuring out what you can do about it.  Put your faith into action and do something about it.  Look globally, locally and internally.  There is poverty all around us if we are willing to look.
